The Day After Christmas

This can be a difficult time of the year. Everybody is supposed to be happy? Everybody is supposed to have lots of money? Everybody is supposed to feel warm and tingly inside? Bull!!! Many people feel sad. Lost a loved one. Lost one's hopes and dreams. In a hospital. In a depression.

Don't let society dictate how you SHOULD be feeling. Honor your feelings. Be in touch with your sadness...but don't allow it to take over all your actions. Find some joy. Take a walk. Call a friend. Don't stay alone if it is depressing you. Money is NOT everything. Many stores want you to buy buy buy. Remember money DOES NOT bring happiness. Make something for someone you love. Cookies. A card. Call and tell someone how you feel. That will be more of a gift and will help to bring you some joy.

There are many places that are free. Go to the library and go to google.com and find some events to go to that will be fun. If no one is interested in going with you....go alone. You'll find others who will be like-minded there.

If you find reasons to not do anything and stay cooped up unhappy in your hole of depression...beware! Depression is the negative dialogue you are having in your head. It finds excuses not to do anything and to wallow in negativity. Careful to stay too long in this frame of mind.

Ask yourself..."What do I want?" Try to give yourself some things you want. Some may be out of your reach right now. That's okay. Don't give up. You are worth it. No one really knows better than you what can make you happy or did previously. Try to be very compassionate and loving with yourself. Negativity just breeds more negativity. Positive thoughts and actions are worth the effort.

Be courageous and do some things you want but are afraid to do that really are not risking you harm. Make that phonecall. Step out your door. Keep encouraging yourself. Stay around positive situations and people.

You are worth every effort you make.

Hello Nancy,

I love your blog. Keep writing. This time last year I was so depressed I called up a long-lost friend on New Year's Eve day, before the night. I could have played it cool and wished her a happy holiday, but I was in such a funk I babbled on and on about what was going on, and I made a mess of it, mostly because I was a mess myself. That was when the medication had stopped working. Now this year it's much better. It had gotten so poorly last year that I couldn't watch the news on TV without getting upset every time I saw the president mouthing off or news about Iraq.

This time around I have a better medication, so hopefully the positive trend will continue.

I wish you all the success in the world with your blog.

Happy blogging!

Chris
